With Padum as its headquarters, Zanskar lays 242kms away from Kargil. This heavenly land marked with old Buddhist monasteries remains open for just 4 months due to harsh winter experienced by the region when temperature falls up to minus 30 degrees which also makes this area one of the coldest inhabited areas of the world.
The Stud and Tsarup rivers meet at Padum to form the Zanskar River which also serves as a tributary to river Indus when it joins the former at Nimmu village. The famous Chadar Trek takes place over the frozen Zanskar River starting from Nimmu during peak winters.
