Trekking is the most popular activity to be undertaken in the Himalayas. The lofty peaks and steep slopes with treacherous roads have always attracted adventure lovers from all over. Ladakh too possesses some of the most exciting trekking routes varying in difficulty level for all sorts of people. The most important treks of this region include the Chadar Trek and the Snow Leopard Trek which are the only ones of their kind.
Chadar Trek is the most difficult of all treks in Ladakh. The journey starts from the confluence of Zanskar River and Indus River from where it goes to the interior of Zanskar Valley. It is a 9-12 days trek wherein you will be encountered with beautiful sites of glaciers and snow-covered mountains. The idea of walking over a huge river like Zanskar in its frozen state is itself quite thrilling. The trek takes place during peak winters for obvious reasons and is only for the brave hearted.
Starting from mid-November up till March, the Snow Leopard Trek takes place in the Hemis National Park which is home to a variety of mountain animals. At an elevation of 4100 metres, it covers the entire Rumbak Valley. The trek is marked with sights of Tibetan wolves, Eurasian brown bears, horned sheep, and blue sheep and of course, snow leopards. One can experience chills of excitement throughout the trek due to claw tracks dotting the way. A 13-days trek, the Snow Leopard Trek will quench your thirst for animal love, especially for the endangered ones.
