Changthang is a vast barren plateau with an elevation of about 10,000 ft to 14,000 ft above sea level. The region being the northernmost border of India and Tibet (China), visitors are required to have permits before entering this area. Due to the harsh climatic conditions and rough terrain, this region is sparsely populated.
It is this reason that nomadic tribes inhabit this region for short spans. A major nomadic tribe is the Chang-pa while Rung-pa tribe can be seen to settle for longer in various villages of the plateau. Changthang also possesses two hot springs- Puga and Chumathang, which are blessed with medicinal properties.
